BAKERSFIELD,
CALIFORNIA (November 6, 2012)
– Looking to end his 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West season strong,
Derek Thorn will take Bob Bruncati's Sunrise Ford #6 to Phoenix
International Raceway this weekend with eyes on a race win and
possible shot at the series championship. In Thorn's first full
season in the K&N Pro Series, he finds himself just 29 points out of
first place in the series standings.
Thorn is looking forward to strong showing in the series finale as
he looks forward to the 2013 season, where he will return to the
seat of the blue and orange #6 Ford for a run at next year's
championship as well.
The 15 race campaign this season has visited four road courses and
tracks across the country. Thorn's season has included wins at NAPA
Speedway and Havasu 95 Speedway both in the desert southwest. Thorn
will try to translate that success to the one-mile Phoenix
International Raceway in a race that will be televised live on
SPEED.
"It has been a great season for us," Thorn said. "We had two rough
races this year that highlight a majority of our points we lost.
Bob Bruncati, Bill Sedgwick, and I had high expectations at the
beginning of the season and to be in the contention for the
championship goes to show the effort the team has put into this
season. It's been a blast and can't thank everyone enough for such
a great opportunity and I am really looking forward to finishing the
season off right in Phoenix."
Victory at Havasu 95 Speedway locked Thorn into the "UNOH Battle at
the Beach" to be held next February at Daytona International
Speedway. K&N East and West teams will come together to race on a
temporary four-tenths mile oval on the backstretch of the "World
Center of Speed" during Speedweeks.
In three career starts at Phoenix, Thorn has recorded finishes of
fifth, third, and fifth. With a 2012 record of 10 top-fives and 12
top-tens, the Lakeport native looks poised to improve his track
record and go for the win on Saturday night. Over the last three
starts he has produced an average finish of third. In the most
recent event at All American Speedway, he came back from being spun
out of the lead to finish in the fourth position in a
come-from-behind effort.
Saturday night's contest will be a 50 lap sprint that will require a
strong qualifying effort to run up front. Thorn's career has been
marked by qualifying success most notably when he splashed onto the
national stage as the 2011 Toyota All-Star Showdown pole sitter.
The busy campaign for Bob Bruncati's team also sees Thorn's teammate
Austin Dyne in the midst of a battle for the Sunoco Rookie of the
Year.
Saturday's race will be broadcast live on SPEED with coverage
beginning at 4 p.m. PST. NASCAR Home Tracks provides race updates
lap-by-lap on the series website as well.
